Program Description:
Explore the world of instrument making with professional luthier Gary Zimnicki of Zimnicki Guitars.
Gary Zimnicki is a world-renown luthier (stringed instrument maker) from Allen Park, MI. Gary has been building guitars, mandolins, and ukuleles since 1979. In 2011 he began crafting instruments from wood removed from houses in Detroit. These exceptional instruments pay tribute to the history of Detroit and the craftsmen who built the homes. There will be homework in this class. Students will be sent home with tools.
Learning Objectives:
Understand steel-string guitar construction
Learn about bracing systems for guitars
Learn how to properly glue guitar parts
Learn guitar joinery
Learn how to do the binding
Learn how to attach a neck via a dovetail joint
Learn how to properly fret a guitar
Learn how to properly do a guitar set-up
Learn how to string and tune a guitar
Discuss different finishing options
Students will make a OOO body style acoustic guitar. Solid Indian Rosewood back & sides, Spruce top, Dovetail neck, 24.9" scale, White endpiece & heel cap, 28 Style top & back inlay
Attendance Requirements: Students must attend all days
