Program Description:

On October 5th and 6th, 2024, the SBWI will be hosting two children’s tool caddy workshops in conjunction with the PlaneWave Art & Science Open House. We hope to reach the youth of Lenawee County by offering these workshops free of charge during a community event. With the help of our skilled woodworkers and volunteers, we aim to assist 100 children in building tool caddies (50 children each day). This initiative is especially important as many children in our area lack access to high-quality skilled trades instruction. We believe that introducing more children to woodworking can have a lasting impact on their lives.

These workshops provide a valuable opportunity for children to learn woodworking skills by constructing their very own tool caddy, which they can take home and use. Beyond teaching practical skills, this project instills a sense of accomplishment and introduces young people to the sustainable practice of woodworking. Our team for this event will include three paid staff members who will prep and lead the workshops, along with volunteers from the community and our current class of college students.

We have a history of success with our children’s workshops and are proud of the positive feedback we’ve received. In years past, we have taught children to build catapults, tool caddies, wooden stilts, shaker oval boxes, and park benches - all at no cost to the families. Last year, we built 400 wooden catapults with children.

Once they have completed their tool caddies, each child will be able to stock it with donated tools from our sponsors including:
