Program Description:

Immerse yourself in the world of studio furniture, drawing from the innovative designs of Wharton Esherick, a pioneering figure in the American studio furniture movement. This 5-day course offers students a unique opportunity to craft two distinct Wharton Esherick inspired stools, showcasing the blend of artistic form and functionality.

Kicking off with a comprehensive understanding of studio furniture and Esherick's influence on the craft, students will be introduced to the materials and tools vital to the creation process. The following days will be dedicated to the hands-on experience, where students will actively engage in turning the legs on a lathe, ensuring precision and symmetry. Carving stretchers will follow, enhancing the stool's structural stability and aesthetic appeal.

The heart of this course lies in sculpting the stool seats. Drawing inspiration from Esherick's organic forms and innovative designs, students will carve two unique seat shapes, each resonating with individual creativity while staying true to the spirit of Esherick's work. Every step, from wood selection to the final finish, will be covered meticulously. The course not only emphasizes the technicalities but also instills a deeper appreciation for the art and history of studio furniture.

Course Materials:

All materials will be provided. Each student will be provided with a tailor-made course handout that captures the essence of Wharton Esherick's influence on studio furniture, detailed guidelines on the techniques taught, and a visual guide to seat shapes and designs. This resource is a reflection of the student's journey throughout the course and a reference for their future endeavors in the realm of studio furniture.
