The SBWI is exploring the option to begin a full-time 40-week Timber Frame Program in the Fall of 2028. Please click the button below to apply for the program and be on the list to receive more information as it becomes available.

Please note, applying for the program does not commit you to attend or pay for the program. There is no fee to apply. It simply helps us gather information about the potential student-base for this program.

Once the Timber Framing Program is approved, you will need to complete the following:

Step 2: Schedule a Tour Day at SBWI

Step 3: Bring a Statement of Purpose, Letter of Recommendation, & copies of High School and/or College transcripts.

Upon acceptance we will need the following documents:

  1. Enrollment Agreement

  2. Student Deposit or Payment Plan Loan Agreement

Our biggest hurdle in starting the Timber Frame program is space. We are in the process of building additional facilities.

Timber Frame Sustainability

A career in timber framing can be a very rewarding. Our 40 week program will teach you the skills you need to hit the ground running. The SBWI timber framing program was developed in partnership with the Timber Framers Guild.

Upon completion of the program you will earn a diploma in timber framing. During the course you will learn several valuable skills including safe work practices, drawing and specifications for timber design, timber management and conversion, timber grading, trade practices, timber framing techniques, joinery, tools and equipment, raising & rigging, conservation techniques, and finishing.


Your education will consist of classroom work and hands-on building. You will gain experience by building several different timber frame projects.

As you graduate from the program with your diploma, you will have the experience necessary to join the timber framing industry, start your own business, or continue your education.

Yes. Anyone, regardless of woodworking background or experience. We accept all levels from complete beginners to experienced professionals looking to further their education and resume.

Students of the Sam Beauford Woodworking Institute come from all walks of life. They are veterans, high-school students & graduates, college students, professors, white collar professionals, farmers, all with diverse backgrounds.

Everyone has the common desire to learn new skills and become more self sufficient through the art of wood. Students of SBWI become life-long friends, sharing the unique experience of creating.
