Create a timeless piece of furniture in our Crafting Comfort: Arts & Crafts Upholstered Bench course. In this hands-on class, you’ll build a traditional Arts & Crafts style bench that’s both beautiful and functional—a versatile addition to any room in your home. This project serves as an excellent introduction to essential woodworking techniques, focusing on basic joinery skills and upholstery.
Throughout the course, you’ll master the art of mortise and tenon joinery, a fundamental skill that will elevate your future woodworking projects. After constructing the bench frame, you’ll dive into the world of upholstery, learning how to craft and install a simple cushion using the wrap-and-staple method. Bring your own fabric (1.5 yards required) to complete your custom bench. All other materials are provided.
Learning Objectives:
Master the use of a marking gauge and square for precise joinery layout.
Understand the fundamentals of sizing and spacing mortise and tenons, a cornerstone of woodworking.
Learn to bore a mortise using a hollow chisel mortiser, and alternatively, a drill press and chisel.
Gain proficiency in cutting tenons on the table saw for perfect joinery.
Explore the Festool Domino joiner as a modern alternative to traditional mortise and tenons.
Develop skills in dry fitting and glue-up techniques to ensure your bench is square and sturdy.
Get acquainted with basic upholstery materials including foam, batting, adhesive, staple guns, and fabric.
Learn to size, cut, and wrap fabric for any cushion size, ensuring a professional finish.
Perfect your technique in wrapping fabric around corners for clean, crisp edges.
Install your custom upholstered cushion onto your bench for a finished, polished look.
By the end of this course, you’ll have a handcrafted, upholstered Arts & Crafts bench, along with the skills to confidently approach both woodworking and upholstery projects in the future.
