Program Level: Intermediate, Advanced

Program Description:

In this class we will learn two “second level” techniques: radial veneering, and double bevel marquetry. Both are extensions of the skills learned in the Veneering and Marquetry Intensive class.

Radial veneering involves making a circular pattern from many thin pie shaped pieces of veneer, cut from consecutive sheets of veneer. The resulting pattern is intense and elegant, and looks much harder to make than it actually is. This technique is used in both high style traditional furniture and modern furniture, particularly as a background to elegant marquetry, which is what we will use it for. Double bevel marquetry is the most flexible saw-based marquetry technique. Each piece is cut separately, so colors and grain direction for each piece can be determined individually. In addition, since the saw blade is tilted, there is no gap between pieces such as happens in packet cut (Boulle) marquetry. The result is painterly, rather than looking like a stained-glass window or ink drawing.

We will make an oval tray with a radial pattern background supporting a hummingbird and hibiscus flower made using the double bevel technique.

Dave Heller is a retired Chemical Engineer. Dave has been building furniture for 35 years, and professionally since 2009. Dave has a passion for learning and studying the work of masters, so it can be hard to narrow a description of his interests or style. Federal furniture is a long-term interest. Recently he is particularly drawn to the elegant geometric patterns and marquetry designs of furniture from the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods. Art Deco in particular is a continuation of the aesthetic of the European precursors to Federal furniture. Learn more here: https://hellerandhellerfurniture.com/
