Program Description:
Join Luke Barnett for a 2 session class on wooden spoon carving. Tools and wood will be provided by the instructor. Students are welcome to bring their own tools. This is a perfect intro class for sculptural and green woodworking.
Day 1: Students will become familiar with the process of carving a wooden spoon, learn what woods are favorable to carve a spoon from, and the various design aspects of spoons. Students will start with spoon blanks and use a fixed blade and hook knife to carve the shape of their spoon.
Day 2: Students will continue to use a fixed blade and hook knife to bring their spoons closer to a finish and discuss the drying process and finishing options. Students will have the opportunity to complete additional spoons as time allows.
Learning Objectives:
Learn the different design components of a wooden spoon
Learn how to choose wood to carve a spoon from
Learn what kinds of tools you need to carve a spoon
Learn knife grips for spoon carving with fixed blades and hook knives
Learn about food safe finish options
Students will carve a spoon of their own design
Attendance Requirements: Students must attend all days
