Program Description:

Craft a Post & Rung Side Chair with expert guidance from Zack Fealk in this comprehensive chairmaking course. Over the span of the course, students will be taken step-by-step through the intricate process of handcrafting a chair. Starting with the selection of lumber, students will progress through each stage of the chairmaking journey, culminating in the final assembly using traditional hide glue.

Learning is broken down into small, manageable steps, allowing students to master each task before moving on to the next. Opportunities to practice on spare materials are provided whenever a new process, particularly hand shaping, is introduced, ensuring confidence before working on the actual chair components. With a maximum of 5 students, you'll receive personalized instruction in a fully equipped woodworking college with state-of-the-art work benches.

Learning Objectives:

  • Master the art of steam bending to create the perfect curves for your chair components

  • Gain proficiency in hand shaping parts using essential tools such as the drawknife, spokeshave, and scraper.

  • Learn to work effectively with angles and curved parts to achieve the precision required for a well-balanced chair.

  • Understand the critical role of moisture content and grain orientation in creating durable, long-lasting joints.

  • Experience the traditional method of assembly using hide glue, ensuring the integrity and longevity of your chair.

  • Finish the course with hands-on experience in seat weaving, adding the final touch to your handcrafted chair.

  • At the end of the course, students will walk away with a fully assembled, hand-crafted Post & Rung Side Chair, equipped with the knowledge and skills to continue chairmaking independently.
