Artist Statement

I’ve been called many things and some of them have been complimentary. But the one thing I would want to be known as is a woodworker. Sometimes it was a hobby but always an obsession. Over the years I explored many different vocations: lawn mowing, white water rafting guide, insurance salesmen (yeah...yikes), fiberglass boat repair technician, stock clerk, shipping and receiving manager, factory line worker...but I almost always came back to construction because I could work with wood on a regular basis. My last job included creating custom sheds and cabins, it led to the discovery that I not only really liked the challenge of custom creation but also the finer detail work.  However, only occasionally getting to work on the finer and more challenging stuff wasn’t enough. I longed to take my woodworking to the next level.

So my wife and I decided to make the leap. We sold our house, moved into a 34 ft RV and with our four kids, relocated from Ashland, WI to Adrian, MI so that I could attend Sam Beauford Woodworking Institute. I know that even though this was a bold and trying move, it was the right one for us. The skill and confidence I have received through my time at SBWI has been monumental towards my childhood dream of having a shop where I could create full-time; a place where my kids could just come and be with me. In many ways, woodworking is like parenting kids. Both are extremely frustrating, humbling, very entertaining, and at times, downright confusing, but you love them all the same.
