Tuition: $225

Ages: 16 & Up

Instructor: Matt Harber

Instructional Delivery Method(s): In person

Prerequisites: Intro to Woodturning Class or Other Turning Experience

Program Description:

This class is comprised of two separate projects: Basic Bowl and Round Box. Each project will reinforce basic bowl turning skills and introduce new techniques.

The Basic Box project will cover basic bowl turning techniques, including how to cut bowl blanks from a log, how to mount the wood, possible bowl design considerations, turning the outside and inside, and how to finish the bottom. During the Round Box project, students will turn a round box with a lid. This section covers box shapes, how to match the grain on the lid to the box, how to mount the piece and turn both the box base and the lid. Discussions will include whether to put a knob on the lid and what shapes/forms work best.

Students must have other lathe experience before attending this class.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn how to cut bowl blanks from a log, including side grain and end grain bowls. Students will also learn how to cut blanks with bark for a natural edge.

  • Learn how to mount a bowl blank, including discussions on whether to use a tenon, a mortise, or a glue block. This section also includes mounting a blank between centers and turning a tenon.

  • Learn to turn the outside of your bowl, including how to identify and eliminate flat spots.

  • Learn to turn the inside of your bowl, including techniques for “turning the  corner” in the transition from bowl sides to the bottom.

  • Learn finishing techniques for the bowl bottoms.

  • Learn how to shift the blank between centers to alter the bowl profile and  get an asymmetric edge.

  • Learn to mount the blank so the base and lid grain-match.

  • Decide whether to add a knob to the lid, learn what shapes work best and how to marry the lid to the box.
