Description: She has a 80 year old red oak table. The two halves are not closing properly. Also the rounded edge profile has been over sanded. She would like help repairing the closing mechanism and re-routing the table profile. 48" round pedestal table with 2 leafs. Solid red-oak. At least 60 years old.

Problems:

1) Does not close evenly (large gaps and uneven)

2) I accidentally oversanded the table and need to re-route the edge profile but am nervous to do it myself

3) There are "valleys" in the table top due to some oversanding

I am happy to have someone finish the re-finishing process as well. Happy to transport table. Table has already been stripped and sanded to 180. Price for work negotiable. I have done some woodworking and understand there is a lot of work involved to get a nice finish.

GAME BOARD REPAIR

Customer: Paul Bray

Email: pfb004@gmail.com

Phone: (267) 455-7644

Goal: to repair cracks in game board cause by “dehydration shrinkage” in palm wood moving from Houston to Salt Lake City. I am thinking that sanding and a simple finish would also be needed after the repair work.

Budget: $300-$450; I have no idea how much time would be needed to do all this, and am happy to discuss this budget range.

Location: I live in Salt Lake City in the Avenues (corner of “B” and 4th Ave); I think I can fit the table in the back of my SUV; if not, a friend can help with his larger vehicle, so I should be able to get it to you

Time Frame – no rush; hopefully in the next couple of months

Image 1: Whole table. Most of the table is made of cherry (legs, frame); the black wood in the table top around the game board and between the cherry is ebony.

Image 2: close-up of game board

Image 3: close-up showing two nearly full-length splits through the game board, with squares made of dark and light palm

Image 4: higher magnification of the split (at about the widest space)

Image 5: another view of the 2nd split

Image 6: photo of some extra pieces I save after the table was finished; these could be used to generate sawdust if the wood-worker thought that using sawdust+glue would be a good approach for repairing

Image 7: cross-section of the palm showing the unique grain (that likely makes it absorb much more water than most woods)

Perhaps the repair person would have other ideas as to how best fix the table (e.g., colored epoxy??). I’d be happy to discuss when the time comes.
